Campus unveils new housing, statue

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony last Wednesday, administrators expressed hope that the additions of the phase II suites and bronco statue will strengthen the campus community. “When students live on campus they are more apt to get involved and be more successful in their academic and social goals — they find the campus experience to be more rewarding,” said university President Michael Ortiz. Study finds 15 campus buildings to be quake hazards

After a detailed study conducted by the CSU Seismic Review Board, 15 Cal Poly buildings have been found to be earthquake hazards, the largest number in the entire CSU system.  Of the buildings on the list, 13 have been rated a “5,” which designates them as hazardous, but unlikely to collapse.

A tumultuous year comes to an end

With many of its students living off campus and commuting to class, Cal Poly has typically been a fairly quiet place. This year proved to be the exception. From the national championship win by the men’s basketball team to the announcement that 15 to 20 academic programs are being considered for elimination, 2009-10 has been a year of spectacular highs and distressing lows.

Senior projects gaining popularity

Senior projects are on the rise, according to the National Survey of Student Engagement, a survey that measures the participation of students with regards to learning. According to the survey, 64 percent of graduating seniors were found to have completed a senior project or thesis.

This year has been wild. The campus was chock full of controversial news for my staff and me to cover, and through this coverage, we have grown as journalists and as people. As you may have already read from our year-end overview in this week’s issue, this year is one that will go down in history as a year when the CSU system took a hard hit and a year when students decided to stand up for what they believed in.
