This year, Campus MovieFest, the world's largest student film festival, is coming to Cal Poly.

Students are invited to direct and film their own movies, with equipment provided for free.

Teams are provided with an Apple laptop, a digital video camera, and even free moviemaking tutorials and technical support.

The event, sponsored by ASI B.E.A.T. and The Poly Post, is organized by The Film Chair, a film review Web site.

Along with Cal Poly; USC, UCLA and Whittier College are also getting the opportunity to make their own movies as well.

"This is a nationwide festival and they approached us to be part of their tour," said Maria-Lisa Flemington, art program manager and interim programs and marketing coordinator for ASI.

The Campus Moviefest will be taking place from now until Nov 9.

Students, faculty, and staff can register their teams on the Campus MovieFest Web site until Oct 30. Each team may consist of two leaders and three or more crew members.

Upon gathering a team, members must meet on Oct. 30 to collect the equipment they will need to create their own film.

Teams are expected to make a five minute film and turn in their finished project before the judging on Nov 9.

Over the course of the event, the originators of Campus Moviefest will also be making an appearance on campus.

"I think it's nice that Cal Poly is branching out from the nerdy engineering stereotype, and is instead taking an interest in other areas. It's great to know that we were invited alongside some big name universities," said Michael Blashak, a third year physics student.

Since 2001, Campus MovieFest has enabled students to express themselves creatively, as well as awarding over $300,000 in prizes.

The program began with four college students from Atlanta, Georgia.

The Emory University students thought it would be fun to provide free equipment and training to other students so they could produce and share their own films.

According to the event's Web site, the goal of the film festival is to display the next generation of filmmakers and give power to those who want to share their stories with the world.

When asked how students would react to the film festival, many were thrilled knowing that they could make their own movies.

"I think it's cool that students are given an outlet to express themselves in a media-friendly environment. Also winning the prize would be cool too," said Blake Brown, a fashion design and marketing student.

Campus Moviefest events will be held in the Bronco Student Center during the week of Oct. 30.
